Piney Falls State Natural Area is a great place for a hike if you’re in the area! We stopped by on a drive from Nashville to Knoxville, and it was a little out of our way but worth it.

There are a couple of options for hiking at Piney Falls, but essentially there are two things you want to see: Lower Piney Falls (a small but pretty waterfall) and Upper Piney Falls, which is the park’s main attraction (and very grand).

From the trailhead, there is a .6-mile trail straight to a junction. From the junction, you can make a loop that will take you to both falls or you can take a left to see the Lower falls and then go back and go the other way for the Upper falls.

The important thing to note is that the full loop involves using a cable to climb up some very steep rocks behind the Upper falls. So if you’re not up for that it’s probably best to see both falls but not use the loop (just make it an out-and-back).

It’s a really pretty hike, no too strenuous or too long. The waterfalls are really beautiful. This is definitely one of the prettier hikes in Tennessee. Well worth a visit if you’re in the area.
